Kamala Harris's 'spa' living room color embodies warm, neutral elegance – it's ultra-calming with a touch of glamor

You've heard of spa bathrooms, but have you ever heard of a spa living room? Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff's space is leading the way for the calming look. With a combination of plush textures and warming beige hues, the Vice President and her husband transform their living room into a calming oasis.

The power couple's living room was revealed in a recent Instagram picture, and we haven't stopped thinking about it since. It features hardwood floors covered in a subtle cream carpet, topped with beige and chocolate brown armchairs. Gold and mirrored cigar tables and a bubbly mid-century modern light fixture bring in a touch of luxury and elegant style. Art pieces on the walls and curtains on the window keep the neutral scheme from feeling too much like a showroom.

'Presidential contender and current Vice President Kamala Harris's beige living room is giving full spa vibes, it is neutral, calming and you feel immediately relaxed,' says Jove Meyer, NYC-based interior designer. He continues, 'I imagine this is very important to her given her very high profile and stressful job, she needs to come home and instantly relax. These neutral tones do that perfectly. The way to keep a neutral space interesting is by being strategic about the pops of any color you do add via art or accessories, as they will stand out a lot because everything else blends in neutral tones.'

Clearly, the warm living room color scheme is a huge part of what makes this look so impactful. Interior designer Kathy Kuo states: 'This living room design is a masterclass in warm neutral elegance. I love that there's a range of tan, brown, and beige tones that actually offer a lot of visual variety while still feeling very understated, welcoming, and livable. The gold metallic accents from the table legs and light fixtures add the perfect dose of glamour.'

Integrating a variety of beige and warm neutral furnishings is the perfect place to start creating a look similar to Harris's home. From a cool, sandy-colored sectional to a light wood side table and rounded lamp, it's about using texture to keep the calm look interesting.

Looking to replicate the neutral living room scheme? Meyer advises: 'If you want to recreate this look I would be sure the walls and floors, the bases of the space are neutral, as they take up the most surface area. From there every piece of furniture you bring in should be soft, neutral, and calming. When it comes to working in neutrals you can blend whites, creams, off-whites, and light tans pretty easily as they all work well together.'

He continues, 'Once you have your space painted and furnished in neutral tones, look around and see where you may want a pop of pattern or color and add it, see how you feel about it, does it tie things together or distract you. If the latter then move it or remove it, it can be a test-and-learn situation with adding bold tones to a neutral room, so start small.'

Neutrality doesn't have to feel neutral, the look can be a striking way to create a calming and inspiring space. Kamala Harris's living room is the perfect example.
