It’s Kamala Harris’ world, and we’re just living in it. That’s the message her stylists are trying to send anyway. On the first night of the Democratic National Convention, Harris wore a bespoke Chloé pantsuit and crepe de chine blouse designed by Chloé director herself, Chemena Kamali.
The suit was a message to young female voters who are kitting themselves out for a Kamali-at-Chloé-inspired boho winter (or summer for us here in Australia). That message? The newly “bratified” VP and presidential hopeful is tapped into the zeitgeist.
Since Joe Biden stepped down from the presidential run, Harris’ strength has been her relative youthfulness. While Biden was mocked for his age, Republican nominee 78-year-old Donald Trump is now faced with a nominee who is far younger than him—and is increasingly making him look a bit “weird” and out of touch.
The presidential hopeful received some criticism on the night for her sartorial choice, as pointed out by the Los Angeles Times. Conventionally, attendees wear a patriotic combination of red, white and blue. Indeed, ten years ago then, President Obama caught similar flack when he showed up in a tan suit, a move that was called “shocking” and “unpresidential” by Republicans.
Jill Biden, who Harris praised in her speech, wore a blue dress by American designer Ralph Lauren. Notably, it’s difficult to find information on which designer Jo Biden or the other men in attendance were wearing because. Very simply, men don’t have their outfits picked apart while they’re on the job. But, Harris stood out in a sea of blue suits and dresses.
Harris’ choice of suit, from a German and Uruguayan female designer whose pieces are being worn by It girls like Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sienna Miller and Kiernan Shipka, speaks volumes about the message she is communicating to her base. Namely, unlike Trump, she’s tapped in and listening to young people, women, and people of colour (Harris heavily favours black designers).
Kamala Harris’ speech at the convention came as a surprise. According to The Guardian, the nominee hopped on stage to thank Joe Biden for his service. “This is going to be a great week, and I want us to kick it off by celebrating our incredible president, Joe Biden, who will be speaking later tonight,” she said. she added: “Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation, and for all you will continue to do, we are forever grateful to you. Thank you, Jo!”
It’s out with the old and in with the new, and we personally love the VP’s new look (and message).
