Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris is making a strategic move to win over suburban voters in three key Midwestern battleground states. She is set to hold moderated conversations with Republican Liz Cheney, a former GOP congresswoman and vocal critic of President Donald Trump.
The vice president's campaign stops will take place in three suburban counties previously won by Republican Nikki Haley before she exited the GOP nomination race. These counties include Chester County, Pennsylvania; Oakland County, Michigan; and Waukesha County, Wisconsin.
The conversations between Harris and Cheney will be moderated by a conservative radio host and a GOP strategist, aiming to engage undecided voters and mobilize Democrats who may be considering abstaining from voting.
With the presidential election just over two weeks away and the race neck and neck, Harris is seeking to secure support from a broad spectrum of voters. Her campaign hopes to sway voters in areas where support for Trump may be waning, emphasizing the significance of every vote in potentially tipping the scales.
Notably, in Waukesha County, Haley garnered over 9,000 primary votes even after withdrawing from the race, underscoring the impact of individual votes in close contests. Wisconsin, a crucial state, was decided for President Joe Biden in 2020 by a mere 20,000 votes.
Cheney, who has endorsed Harris due to her reservations about Trump, will be accompanied by conservative radio host Charles Sykes and GOP strategist Sarah Longwell at the events. Cheney's concerns about Trump stem from her involvement in investigating the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, which led to her losing her House seat.
Joining forces with over 100 former GOP officeholders and officials in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, Harris emphasized the patriotic choice of voting for the Democrats. She has intensified her focus on Trump's falsehoods regarding the 2020 election and his role in the violent Capitol riot, labeling him as “unstable” and “unhinged.”
As the election nears, Harris continues to highlight the serious implications of a potential second term for Trump, warning that his return to the White House would jeopardize democratic norms. In contrast, Trump has downplayed the January 6 incident, describing it as a “day of love” during his campaign rallies.
Harris is scheduled to return to Pennsylvania for a CNN town hall in Delaware County on Wednesday, where she will engage with voters directly and address their questions.
