As we approach the end of the Premier League season the future of Kalvin Phillips is going to be thrust even further into the spotlight. Already in recent weeks there have been growing reports of Manchester United and Liverpool being interested, with Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa said to be leading the race to sign the England midfielder.
Three years on since signing a five-year contract at Elland Road, speculation keeps increasing around Phillips, even though there are two years left to run on his contract. Representatives of the 26-year-old star have been in talks with the Leeds hierarchy for several months now about a new contract at the Whites, with Phillips having shown no desire to leave his boyhood club.
Those talks and Phillips' love for Leeds have done little to quash the speculation that a big-money move to a Premier League rival could be on the cards, with Manchester United said to be growing confident of getting a deal done, something which seems a little speculative.
Now the Telegraph are reporting that Phillips' talks with Leeds have stalled and that has opened the door on a potential £60m move to Aston Villa in the summer. Gerrard is keen to strengthen his midfield at Villa Park and does have the funds available to make a massive signing like Phillips.
Villa and Manchester United are of course not the only team keeping a close eye on Phillips' situation at Elland Road, with West Ham United and big-spending Newcastle United also believed to be interested. However, despite suggestions a deal has stalled with Leeds, Phillips is understood to remain hopeful an agreement can be reached and a new-improved deal will be signed with the Whites in the coming months.
That will be welcome news to Leeds fans, but don't expect it to calm the transfer situation around a player who looks set to dominate the transfer talk this summer until his future is resolved.
