Kalidou Koulibaly explains why he pushed for Chelsea move amid Graham Potter uncertainty

Despite being one of their most high-profile summer arrivals, Kalidou Koulibaly is yet to feature under new Chelsea boss Graham Potter. An ever-present earlier in the season under Thomas Tuchel, the Senegalese centre-back has been an unused substitute in both of Potter's games so far.

The 47-year-old used a back three against RB Salzburg and a back four against Crystal Palace, but the likes of Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella have been selected over Koulibaly in those games. It remains to be seen whether the 30-year-old features in the Blues' crucial Champions League match against AC Milan on Wednesday evening.

It's not been an ideal start to Koulibaly's Chelsea career, but he has revealed that he did everything in his power to push for a move to Chelsea in the summer. It was a huge decision for the defender to end his eight-year association with Napoli, but he was keen to join the Blues.

“I knew that after eight years my time at Napoli was over," he told Carre.

“When one of the best clubs in the world comes to call you, and they want you strongly to be part of their project there is little to do: I did not hesitate, I did everything to go to Chelsea.

“I feel great at Chelsea, my family is perfectly integrated. I arrived at the right moment, I play with players who have won many trophies. It is up to me to show on the pitch that they can count on me, for now I am very happy and I hope to continue like this.”

Given how hard he pushed for a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, Koulibaly will be hoping to push his way into Potter's starting XI in the coming weeks and months. With the fixtures coming thick and fast in the lead up to the World Cup break, he is likely to get his chance to impress in the coming games.
