Kaia Gerber stars in sci-fi short for Alexander McQueen’s new Slash bag

Well, what have we here? Supermodel daughter of Cindy Crawford, Kaia, nuzzling a prosthetic mould of her head, is what.

In a welcome relief to a comically cataclysmic week of rattling fashion headlines – between Raf Simons closing his namesake label, Balenciaga giving bondage teddy bears to kids, and Alessandro Michele’s saying goodbye to GucciKaia Gerber has returned to a spot of acting.

You might remember the model cutting her Hollywood teeth on the set of American Horror Story in 2021. Now she returns, fully trained in lip trembling, on-cue tears, blank stares et cetera, for a sharp-cut Alexander McQueen short film.

The clip, coming in at just under three minutes, was directed by fashion photographer Glen Luchford, and sees Gerber tuck the new, red leather Slashhandbag safely under her arm. The accessory, the focal point of the film, comes with a top flap sliced like a Lucio Fontana canvas complete with McQueen’s signature knuckle-duster hardware and a crystal skull. It is also available in white and black shades. With her hair gelled back, Gerber stomps around an alien future where the light is sepia and vehicles fly around tall skyscrapers.

Having catwalked down a few spooky corridors, the black-clad model finds herself in an infinite white space. Four prosthetic heads appear, three with upper bodies and arms, distressingly skewered on white metal poles.

Gerber finds her own prosthetic face, which she then caresses in deep contemplation, before looking dead into the camera and quietly weeping. The doppelganger then opens its eyes and the room goes black. It’s all very mysterious.

A statement from the brand suggests it is about the “juxtaposition between humanity and technology”, and “human emotion within a futuristic landscape”.

Yes. But also, find joy in the uncanny strangeness of a supermodel spending a moment fondling her prosthetic face.
