Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere Recreate a 34-Year Fashion Connection on Vogue's September Cover

Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere are bringing a striking piece of fashion history full circle.

The Shards co-stars appear together on the cover of Vogue's September 2026 issue, 34 years after Gerber's mother, Cindy Crawford, and Gere's father, Richard Gere, appeared together in the magazine's November 1992 issue.

Photographed by Steven Meisel and styled by Spencer Singer, the new cover connects two generations of famous families while putting the spotlight firmly on Gerber and Gere's own careers in fashion and Hollywood.

The timing is particularly fitting. Gerber and Gere currently star together in FX's The Shards, Ryan Murphy's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel, which premiered Aug. 5.

A Fashion Family Connection 34 Years Later

The parallels between the two Vogue appearances are difficult to miss.

Crawford and Richard Gere were one of the most recognizable celebrity couples of the early 1990s when they appeared in Vogue together. More than three decades later, their children have landed a cover of their own — this time not as a couple, but as co-stars building separate careers.

Gerber, the daughter of Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber, has long established herself in fashion. She began modeling at a young age before becoming a fixture on major runways, magazine covers and luxury campaigns, while increasingly pursuing acting.

Homer Gere, the son of Richard Gere and actress Carey Lowell, is much newer to Hollywood.

Their different levels of experience give the cover another dimension: Gerber arrives as an established fashion figure expanding her acting résumé, while Gere is at the beginning of his screen career.

Steven Meisel Gives the Shoot an '80s Edge

The imagery also complements the world of The Shards.

Meisel photographed the pair with styling by Singer, creating images that evoke the polished glamour and bold proportions associated with the 1980s.

Gerber moves between vivid color combinations, sharp tailoring and statement accessories throughout the shoot, while Gere appears in sleek menswear looks. Chanel is among the major fashion houses featured, alongside other luxury labels throughout the editorial.

The styling provides a natural bridge to The Shards, which is set in Los Angeles in 1981.

Gerber plays Susan Reynolds in the FX drama, while Gere portrays mysterious new student Robert Mallory. The story follows a group of privileged high school seniors whose seemingly glamorous lives become increasingly unsettled as violence and suspicion spread through Los Angeles.

Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere on Their Famous Parents

Despite the obvious family connection, the two actors apparently did not spend much time dwelling on it.

In their Vogue interview, Gere recalled that he and Gerber acknowledged their parents' shared history when they first met before moving on.

Gere also discussed his initial resistance to acting. Unlike Gerber, who began working in fashion while still young, he said he had not grown up seeing himself as a performer and described himself as "not a theater kid at all."

He has nevertheless stepped into an industry closely associated with both of his parents.

Gerber's path has been different. After becoming one of the most recognizable models of her generation, she has steadily expanded into acting, with The Shards giving her another prominent television role.

More Than a Recreation of a Famous Cover

The new Vogue cover works because it does not simply attempt to reproduce the 1992 image.

Instead, it uses the coincidence of Gerber and Gere working together to create a generational fashion moment of its own.

Crawford and Richard Gere's cover represented two already-famous stars during one of the most photographed periods of their lives. Their children's September 2026 appearance captures something different: two second-generation Hollywood figures at evolving stages of their careers.

That makes the 34-year connection an unusually neat intersection of fashion history and contemporary pop culture.

With The Shards now airing and Gerber and Gere appearing together on one of fashion's most prominent magazine covers, the pair may carry famous surnames — but this particular Vogue moment belongs to them.
