Kabul is sliding towards becoming the first modern capital to run out of water, with its aquifers draining at nearly double the rate they refill and almost half of its boreholes already dry.
Groundwater levels in the Afghan capital have fallen by 25 to 30 metres over the past decade, according to a report by Prosper Global, the aid group formerly known as Mercy Corps. Extraction exceeds natural recharge by about 44 million cubic metres a year.
