Juventus outline surprise Arthur contract clause as Liverpool change transfer plans

A statement from Juventus has confirmed that Liverpool have the option to purchase Arthur on a permanent basis after the Reds snapped up the Brazilian midfielder on loan - despite talk of a permanent option being played down.

Despite insisting earlier this summer that the club were done in the transfer market, an accumulation of injuries forced Jurgen Klopp's side to complete a surprise U-turn at the eleventh hour in a bid to acquire the services of a new midfielder.

And the Reds moved quickly to swoop for Arthur; a deal that brings the 26-year-old to the Premier League after months of speculation linking him with a move to the top flight.

Arsenal were heavily linked with the former Gremio man back in January when the Juventus ace was tipped to arrive on a short-term loan deal to beef up Mikel Arteta's midfield options. However, a deal failed to materialise and Arthur remained in Turin.

The Italian giants have been trying to offload Arthur for the majority of the summer window, but, according to UOL, a number of suitors have been unwilling to take on the midfielder's whopping salary, which is said to stand at around €6million (£5.1m).

Liverpool have taken the plunge though after Jordan Henderson became the latest midfield star at Anfield to pick up an injury - and as part of the deal, the Reds could even opt to make Arthur a permanent member of their squad going forward.

In an official statement released by Juventus outlining Arthur's departure, the Serie A outfit have outlined that, not only have Liverpool paid an initial fee of €4.5m (£3.8m) to acquire Arthur's services for the season, but the Reds can also sign the midfielder on a permanent basis for a sum of €37.5m (£32.3m) if he impresses at Anfield. Talk of a permanent option was played down, but it appears as though the clubs agreed on a late compromise to include the additional clause.

After clinching his last-gasp "dream" move, Arthur expressed his delight at joining one of the Premier League's most famous clubs.

“I’m really, really happy to be here wearing this great shirt with this famous badge that represents so much in world football, it’s a dream," the 26-year-old told Liverpool's official website.

“We talked a lot, and our ideas and visions were a good fit so I’m sure it was the right choice. I’m really happy and highly motivated to continue living my dream on the pitch and giving my all in a Liverpool shirt.”

After picking up a hamstring issue in Wednesday night's 2-1 win over Liverpool, club captain Henderson is set to join Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones on the sidelines.

And that could see Arthur thrust straight into the action for this weekend's Merseyside derby against Everton.
