Production for the tenth “Fast & Furious” movie took an unexpected turn, as Justin Lin is stepping down as director.
Lin, who has directed five films in the cars-and-crime franchise, will remain with “Fast X” as a producer, he said in an announcement Tuesday.
“Over 10 years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases,” Lin said in a statement. “On a personal note, as a child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history.”
Lin, 50, didn’t say why he’s leaving the director’s chair for “Fast X,” which is scheduled to zoom into theaters on May 19, 2023. His replacement has not been announced.
Vin Diesel, who stars as Dom Toretto in the “Fast & Furious” movies, announced last week that production for the latest film was underway.
“I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew and studio for their support, and for welcoming me into the FAST family,” Lin said.
Lin most recently directed the film franchise’s ninth installment, “F9,” which came out last year.
The popular movie series also stars Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang and Nathalie Emmanuel. Brie Larson will make her “Fast & Furious” debut with “Fast X.”
