Justin and Hailey Bieber's bathroom wall design is controversial – but experts agree on its simple, stunning allure

Justin and hailey bieber.

If you asked 100 interior designers their opinions on wallpaper in bathrooms, they would have 100 different answers. Luckily, Justin and Hailey Bieber aren't afraid of a little controversy. The couple's bathroom walls are completely covered in yellow, white, and green wallpaper.

We first spotted the bathroom wallpaper in one of Hailey's Instagram posts (Slides 2 and 5) and we haven't stopped thinking about it since. The Biebers' interior designer expertly paired their classic floral wallpaper with stark white tiles and siding. An ornate rug and vintage chair on the vanity bring in a sense of history. The entire space has an alluring, French antique feel.

'The bathroom is a great space to experiment with a boldly printed wallpaper,' says Jennifer Ebert, color expert and digital editor at Homes & Gardens. 'Because these spaces tend to be smaller than other rooms in the home, wallpaper creates a cozy, intentionally designed ambiance rather than feeling overwhelming.'

She continues: 'In Justin and Hailey Bieber's bathroom, the classic floral wallpaper in yellow, white, and green, brings a sense of whimsy to the bathroom walls. I love how they have used the wallpaper on the ceiling as well as the walls for a cohesive, all-encompassing look that makes it feel like you are stepping into a floral forest. This look would be beautiful with a claw foot bathtub, or other period pieces to enhance the vintage feel.'

However, the controversy surrounding this type of wall decor is not unwarranted. Because it is made out of, well, paper, wallpaper can be difficult to maintain in a high moisture area like the bathroom. In fact, some experts say the bathroom is one of the places you should never wallpaper if you want a low-maintenance home.

Though these risks will never fully go away, they can be mitigated with careful planning. Chelsea Clark, expert at I Love Wallpaper advises: 'It’s best to avoid using wallpaper in areas that experience lots of splashback, such as around a bath or shower, and ensure the room is well-ventilated to avoid peeling.' If these precautions are taken, there are hundreds of examples of successfully wallpapered bathrooms and powder room wallpaper.

Shop The Look

Neutral wallpaper is an easy way to implement the style of Justin and Hailey Bieber's home in your own space. We love this simple gray-and-white version from Wayfair, that offers timeless style at an accessible price point. Our editors love the classic toile of this QVC pattern, which looks traditional, but with a bit more visual interest. Finally, my personal favorite is a watercolor style roll from CB2, which has an ultra-stylish, contemporary feel.

If you're hoping to implement the style in your home, but are anxious about the difficulty of cleaning walls with wallpaper, Clark offers tips to make it easier. She recommends: 'For a fuss-free, budget-conscious alternative, opt for faux-textured wallpapers which will provide the same designer look for less. As bathrooms have high levels of humidity and moisture, opt for a wallpaper with a vinyl coating or a scrubbable finish that can provide extra durability.'

Though bathroom wallpaper is controversial, Hailey and Justin Bieber's bathroom scheme is proof that when done right, it can pay off.
