ACTIVISTS from Just Stop Oil have staged a protest outside Parliament to coincide with Andy Burnham's first PMQs.
Just Stop Oil activists have resumed a campaign against new oil and gas licenses, as a government decision on plans for the Rosebank oil field and Jackdaw gas field is imminent, following a public consultation that concluded in August.
Sharing videos of activists being removed from the road by police, the group said on social media: "Just Stop Oil are demanding Andy Burnham signs a Fossil Fuel Treaty and stops approving all future oil and gas projects.
"We do not consent to plans that will result in 3°C of warming and mass death. For f***'s sake, Just Stop Oil."
Within 30 minutes, police officers were on the scene carrying protesters into nearby police vans.
At the same time, a crowd of supporters stood nearby, holding banners and placards which alternately read: "For Future's/ Food's/ Our Children's Sake, Just Stop Oil!".
Trish Fitzmaurice, a mother from Norfolk on the road today, said ahead of the action: “Andy Burnham, we are crying out for leadership! The climate crisis is the biggest threat humanity has ever faced. We are destroying our only home by burning fossil fuels. Oil and gas mean death.”
Sam Burgess, 26, a student from Lancaster, added: “More oil is a death sentence: the unprecedented heatwaves killed over 35,000 extra people in Europe this summer. I’m not going to sit by and wait for this figure to include someone I love. The government must start protecting its citizens and Just Stop Oil.”
The Met Police have said: "Police were called at 12:04hrs on Wednesday, 2 September following reports of disruption on Parliament Square.
"Officers are currently on scene and continue to engage with a group of people, believed to be Just Stop Oil supporters.
"Specialist officers have been deployed, and some members of the group have been removed from the road.
"We are working closely with partners including TfL to reduce disruption in the area for Londoners."
