Just Stop Oil: Arrests as 50 eco-warriors blockade oil terminals

Police have moved in to arrest dozens of eco-activists attempting to disrupt deliveries of oil from three different sites.

As many as 50 Just Stop Oil protesters are trying to block supplies from two oil facilities with some climbing on top of an oil tanker.

The group set up a roadblock and dug tunnels underneath a key tanker route to “occupy” the Grays Oil terminal in Thurrock, Essex at 6am on Tuesday.

Essex Police said they had made 20 arrests at the site so far.

Inspector Stuart Austin said: “We are working to resolve these situations as quickly and safely for all those involved.

“We are focussed on keeping the county moving and keeping you safe.

“Road disruption is currently minimal and I’d like to thank local drivers, workers, and business for their patience.

“I want to be clear: policing is not anti-protest but we must intervene where there is a risk to life or where laws are being broken.”

In North Warwickshire, around 20 eco-warriors have tried to block two main access roads to the Kingsbury Oil Terminal.

Two supporters of Just Stop Oil climbed on top of a tanker on Trinity Road after traffic was brought to a halt by the roadblocks.

Catherine Rennie-Nash, 72, a retired teacher from Kendal taking action in Essex said: “I am beyond angry about the government’s plans to allow more oil and gas projects in the UK. I have no choice but to be in civil resistance.”

Sam Holland, 20 , a student from Leeds who is also taking action in Essex today said: “Consenting to more fossil fuels is consenting to the collapse of our food systems. It is consenting to the collapse of our societies, and to the deaths of hundreds of millions of people.”
