Jury finds man guilty of trying to break into neighbour's home in Shotts

A man was caught on CCTV as he tried to break into his neighbour’s home in Shotts.

Paul O’Neill was identified by the two-tone jumper he was wearing, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard last week.

O’Neill, 40, denied attempted housebreaking in Inverkip Drive on May 13 last year, but a jury found him guilty. He was cleared of stealing a £50 spade from the same location.

O’Neill lodged a special defence of alibi and his lawyer, Bobby Reid, challenged the quality of the CCTV footage.

The court heard O’Neill has a long criminal record, stretching back 20 years.

In recent years he has been jailed for assault and possession of a knife.

O’Neill spent 12 months in custody awaiting trial in the latest case and avoided further punishment after the court heard he is in custody for another matter.
