Jurrien Timber could prove an even bigger bargain for Erik ten Hag after Man United decision

Jurrien Timber’s potential arrival at Manchester United could be more cost effective than originally deemed.

Many club fans will feel his acquisition will be a step in the right direction under new boss Erik ten Hag. The 20-year-old kept a phenomenal 21 league clean sheets this season as he lifted his second Eredivisie title.

The centre-half was a sturdy presence in the middle of the Ajax defence and was one of the first names of ten Hag’s teamsheet. The Netherlands international offers great versatility.

In five of his games this term, Timber has played at right-back. In fact, the season prior, he featured there on 11 occasions. Furthermore, he’s never lost a first-team game while playing on the right.

Ten Hag will be well aware of this and so Timber may not only be a solid choice at centre-half for United, but also a great back-up for Diogo Dalot. The Manchester Evening News reported last week that United have decided to put Aaron Wan-Bissaka up for sale after an underwhelming stay at Old Trafford.

Many assume Ten Hag will be scouting for a replacement but should he retain the services of Timber once again, he may not have to splash out on another right-back. If so, it would allow funds to be diverted towards more pressing areas of the squad, such as the midfield.

Ajax are reportedly asking for €35m (£30m) for Timber - a fee that United should be prepared to shell out given Timber’s versatility. Ten Hag recently praised the player for his character, explaining how he has qualities that may one day see him become a captain.
