Jurgen Klopp sends Darwin Nunez message as Eddie Howe defends Liverpool time-wasting claims

It's derby day! Here's your Liverpool FC digest for Saturday, September 3.

Jurgen Klopp sends Darwin Nunez message

Jurgen Klopp is confident the returning Darwin Nunez will not be rattled by any derby-day provocations if he makes his return at Goodison Park this afternoon.

The £64million summer signing served the last of his three-game ban for headbutting Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen on Wednesday, but managed to catch the eye once again for shouting at the Newcastle United dugout following Fabio Carvalho's late winner on Wednesday.

He will battle in-form Roberto Firmino for a place in the starting line-up at lunchtime, but the ease at which Palace's centre-back riled up the 23-year-old has called into question his temperament. Klopp, however, doesn't think the Toffees defenders will target his Uruguayan star - but added they will likely be wasting their time and energy anyway.

"I don’t think (James) Tarkowski and (Conor) Coady are famous for too much this kind of talking during the game," Klopp said during his pre-game press conference. "Most of the things he doesn’t understand anyway, but you don’t have to be too creative with it. I don't think the two boys are like this, but who knows? We will see."

Eddie Howe defends Newcastle time-wasting

Eddie Howe has claimed he has no problem with his Newcastle United team being booed off by Liverpool fans as he aims to compete with the Premier League elite.

The Magpies left the field to a chorus of jeers from home fans after they lost 2-1 thanks to Carvalho's 98th-minute finish, thanks in part to their streetwise attempts to slow Reds momentum and quieten the raucous Anfield atmosphere. A series of tactical fouls, mysterious injuries and slow set-pieces frustrated fans throughout, and they will have felt vindicated when Carvalho's close-range strike hit the net eight minutes into injury-time.

But Newcastle boss Howe said on Friday he was not bothered that his side were booed off on Wednesday as it showed they were competitive throughout and caused Klopp's side problems.

"I don't have any emotion about being booed off," Howe said on Friday morning. "Certainly, we don't want to be clapped off by the opposition in a sympathetic sense. We're here to compete and no part of me thinks differently. How that's perceived by other people has no relevance to me."
