Jurgen Klopp wants Roberto Firmino to remain at Liverpool beyond the end of this season, despite the Reds confirming the capture of Cody Gakpo this week.
Brazilian Firmino will be out of contract at the end of the current campaign after a stellar eight-year stint at Anfield during which he has won almost every major honour on offer to him.
But the arrival of Dutch forward Gakpo will see competition for attacking places intensify even further as Liverpool's number nine contests for a place in the forward line alongside Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.

Firmino, who was left out of Brazil's World Cup squad in Qatar, is now 31, but when Klopp was asked during his Leicester City pre-match press conference whether the arrival of Gakpo impacted the veteran forward's future, he said: "No, not for me. We have talked to Bobby and from my point of view I want him to definitely stay. [Gakpo's arrival has] no impact."
When pushed on whether Firmino would move on anyway, Klopp added: "You would have to ask Bobby about that. But from my point of view, no."
Firmino joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim in 2015 for £29million and has gone on to make 348 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 107 goals. But increased competition for forward line spots in an evolving Liverpool team leaves the Brazilian with a decision to make over his future this summer.
