Jurgen Klopp makes brutally honest Liverpool admission after Nottingham Forest defeat

Jurgen Klopp admitted that he was left feeling "as low as possible" after watching his Liverpool side slump to a surprise 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds have endured a tough start to the season but they headed to the City Ground in a buoyant mood after recording consecutive victories over Manchester City and West Ham.

But Liverpool produced a laboured, lacklustre performance against their hosts, who rose to the occasion to claim just their second Premier League win of the season courtesy of a second-half strike from summer signing - and former Reds striker - Taiwo Awoniyi.

Liverpool have now lost three league games this season - meaning they have already lost on more occasion than they did during the entirety of the 2021/22 campaign. And their latest setback was hard to swallow for Klopp, who conceded he was at rock bottom.

Asked how he was feeling post-match, he told BT Sport: "As low as possible. Massive, massive blow because I have no idea how we can lose this game to be honest. Not that we played exceptionally well, not that I expect that but it would have been nice.

"With all the changes we had to make and with the intense week behind us it was clear we had to make a fight of it. The boys did that. The chances they had were pretty much counter attacks where we gave the ball too easily away. We were dangerous and a real threat and the set pieces were 100 per cent chances pretty much.

"That we didn’t finish one of these off is the main blow if you want because we cannot put them in better, you cannot move better and if you have one player completely free in the box that is the perfect set piece.

"The goal we conceded was giving the ball away in a situation which should not happen, then the set piece was sloppy and they finished it off."

The Reds were once again without a number of key players for the match. It was revealed that Thiago Alcantara pulled out on the morning of the match with an ear infection, and Klopp was left to bemoan his luck after the match.

He added to Match of the Day: "We played against a deep defending side. We didn’t train in this formation one second because Jones was not in the plans. He was close and we can see he is now fit which is great, but he didn’t play this position before.

"Then Thiago gets an infection over night and is out and you have to make a decision. Can Henderson start again? I was concerned from the medical department not too long so we changed like this. It was clear we had to get used to it. We didn’t hit the target and the goalie made a sensational save but that’s it now and we cannot change it."
