Jurgen Klopp gives Diogo Jota injury update after Liverpool substitution in Inter Milan win

Jurgen Klopp says Diogo Jota will be assessed on Thursday after suffering ankle ligament damage in the 2-0 win over Inter Milan.

The Portugal international was withdrawn at half-time of the victory in the San Siro on Wednesday night before his replacement, Roberto Firmino, headed in the opening goal against the Italian champions.

Mohamed Salah scored goal number 24 of his campaign to double the advantage late on as the Reds put themselves firmly in control ahead of the second leg at Anfield next month.

Despite the positives, however, Klopp confirmed Jota was taken off as a precaution after hurting his ankle.

PLAYER RATINGS: Virgil van Dijk excellent and Luis Diaz exciting at Inter Milan

PAUL GORST: What Virgil van Dijk did to Lautaro Martinez proves Jurgen Klopp right

"I am really happy with everything apart from the fact that Diogo had to go off with something around the ankle ligament, we don't know exactly," Klopp told BT Sport after the game.

"He could play on obviously, which maybe is a good sign, but at half-time the ankle was swollen anyway, so we had to change.

"So apart from that it's just another adult performance and I am really happy about that.

Speaking in his post-match conference, Klopp added: "Do I know the full extent yet? No, I don't know that yet.

RATE THE LIVERPOOL PLAYERS FOR INTER MILAN WIN:

"It is as I said, he has a twisted ankle, it looks swollen.

"That is obviously not a good sign but we will have to see. We will check it as early as possible tomorrow but we need further assessment."

Liverpool entertain Norwich City next in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
