Jurgen Klopp gives Diogo Jota injury update after half-time substitution in Liverpool’s win over Inter Milan

Jurgen Klopp revealed Diogo Jota had to come off at half-time of Liverpool’s win over Inter Milan with a swollen ankle.

The forward started the match but was replaced at the break by Roberto Firmino, who went on to score the opening goal as Liverpool won 2-0 at the San Siro and took control of the Champions League tie.

The Liverpool boss admitted it is too soon to know how serious the injury to Jota is, but it was the only sour note on another impressive European night for the Reds.

“I’m really happy with everything, apart from that Diogo had to go over with something around the ankle ligament,” Klopp said.

“We’ll see, we don’t know exactly. He could play on obviously which was a good sign, but at half-time the ankle was swollen and we had to change.

“Apart from that, it was another adult performance and I’m really happy about that.”

Liverpool were on the ropes for much of the second-half as Inter piled on the pressure, but the away side kept the Italians out and then ruthlessly took charge late on.

Klopp knows his team were far from their best, but had another quality through Firmino and Mohamed Salah to take a comfortable advantage to Anfield to the second-leg.

“We started really well, played around their formation in the beginning,” Klopp said.

“Then they came up a bit with the pretty direct play and switches out to the wing-backs, we didn’t defend that too well. Too often our full-backs were alone in a one-on-one situation and that doesn’t work properly.

“In a game like this you have to keep the ball and that didn’t happen often enough.

“We had not a brilliant day but a good enough day to be a deserved winner, we scored two wonderful goals.”
