Jurgen Klopp gives Curtis Jones update after Liverpool substitution

Jurgen Klopp has acknowledged that Liverpool find themselves still fighting on all fronts due to the ability of players to step-up and deliver when called upon.

The Reds advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after beating Norwich City 2-1 at Anfield and can reach this stage of the Champions League should they knock Inter Milan out of the competition on Tuesday evening.

At the heart of Liverpool's triumph over the Canaries on Wednesday evening were the likes of Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez and Takumi Minamino, a trio who have each struggled for regular first-team starts.

Strength in depth continues to be hailed as the major factor behind Klopp's side fighting for a quadruple, though it is the attitude of individuals producing the goods at varying times that continues to hold the key to success.

"That's the reason, you are right," agreed the Reds' boss when asked if the 2021/22 campaign has been defined by every player contributing to the cause.

"We have this kind of mentality and character in the squad. Another good example is Curtis Jones, who played an exceptional game tonight. Joe Gomez, we don't have to discuss his quality. He showed it again tonight.

"That's exactly what we need to be successful in the long-term. Nobody knows what will happen this year but, in the long-term, we need this kind of quality.

"The boys don't fight each other for a position, but they have to fight to be their best version. Then they have a good chance to be in the line-up for the weekend but no guarantee. That means you have to do it again, again and again, until you get that opportunity and then you have to show up. That's what the boys did."

One player who was left out of the matchday squad for Sunday's Carabao Cup final but put this disappointment quickly behind him was Jones, who appeared sharp when in possession prior to being replaced at half-time by Harvey Elliott.

The 21-year-old would have been hoping to complete the full 90 minutes of action at Anfield having started only 13 matches in all competitions prior to kick-off, though it has been confirmed by Klopp that the Liverpool-born midfielder was removed as a precaution.

"Another really top performance was Curtis, who played a really good first half, but we had to take him off as he felt the thigh slightly," said the German.

"I don't think it is a real injury but there was not need to take a risk."
