Liverpool plan worked perfectly but Jurgen Klopp now faces triple dilemma

Nothing breeds togetherness quite like success.

And Liverpool have found this season's Carabao Cup is strengthening the bond between the first team and the next generation.

While the move to the AXA Training Centre bridged the physical gap between the seniors and the Academy, the booking of a first Wembley final date in six years has provided the first hint of what can be achieved by such closer partnership.

It has, though, given Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp a curious problem. More on that in a bit.

Undoubted is the fact Klopp and his coaching staff have used the run to the Carabao Cup final as an opportunity to both experiment with new ideas and new players.

Indeed, a total of 29 different names have seen game time during the progress that saw Norwich City, Preston North End, Leicester City and Arsenal fall by the wayside.

There have been three goalkeepers alone, with Caoimhin Kelleher - the designated Carabao Cup keeper - deputised by Adrian at Deepdale and then benched in the first leg against Arsenal for Alisson Becker.

Five players - Conor Bradley, Owen Beck, Tyler Morton, Kaide Gordon and Harvey Blair - were all given their first-team debuts, Morton instantly blossoming into a potential future regular while Gordon on Thursday became the first-ever player aged 17 or younger to play in the semi-final or later of a major tournament for Liverpool.

And with James Balagizi, Jarell Quansah, Max Woltman and goalkeepers Marcelo Pitaluga and Liam Hughes all on the bench for at least one Carabao Cup game - Woltman going on to feature in the Champions League and FA Cup - there has been a real sense of inclusion in a competition that, under Klopp, has long been fourth in the list of priorities.

However, the deeper Liverpool have travelled into the competition, stronger their personnel has become.

Diogo Jota, James Milner and Roberto Firmino were all introduced during the dramatic quarter-final win over Leicester City,

Alisson's appearance in last week's home tie against Arsenal was his first ever in the League Cup, while Trent Alexander-Arnold ended a near five-year hiatus from the tournament by starring in both legs against the Gunners. Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho also both made their first Carabao Cup outings of the campaign in the semi-final.

Chelsea, who now stand in the way of Liverpool and a first piece of silverware since lifting the Premier League title in July 2020, have followed a similar approach, Thomas Tuchel using 26 different players during this team's run to the final.

There are, though, three senior Liverpool players who haven't yet contributed.

And while there will undoubtedly be those who believe the trio would be stepping in at the last minute to potentially take the glory from those who have done the hard yards in reaching the final, it would be a brave move from Klopp not to turn to Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara at Wembley.

Both Salah and Mane, who will have returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty, have at least appeared in the League Cup previously. For Thiago, though, it would be a new experience if, as expected, he has recovered from his hip complaint.

Might that upset those who would then miss out? Or would it give everyone the best chance possible of claiming a winners' medal?

Decisions, decisions. One thing if for certain, however.

No matter what happens at Wembley, rarely can so many players have contributed to a Liverpool cup final outing.
