Jurgen Klopp drops Liverpool team selection hint amid striker doubt for Nottingham Forest clash

Striker Darwin Nunez is a doubt for Liverpool ahead of their trip to face Nottingham Forest.

The Reds take on Jurgen Klopp’s side in Saturday’s lunchtime (12.30pm) kick-off at the City Ground. They go into the match looking to end a run of nine Premier League games without a win which has left them bottom of the table.

Forest will have had an extra day to recover, having drawn 0-0 away to Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday night, while Liverpool beat West Ham United 24 hours later. But both teams have some injury issues, with Nunez, who scored the only goal of the game against the Hammers, requiring a late assessment for the visitors.

After the midweek match, Klopp said the Uruguay international had felt his hamstring in the first half and was withdrawn before the hour mark as a precaution. He is unsure whether Nunez will be fit enough to feature against Steve Cooper’s men, however.

“He is one of the cases where we need to have a look because he was not injured, but he felt something,” Klopp said in his pre-match press conference. “I don’t know if he still feels that today and what the medical department tells me then. We have to see. He had treatment yesterday.”

Regardless of Nunez’s fitness, the Liverpool boss has hinted he could make changes to his side against the Reds, at the end of a busy week. “No new injuries, no new comebacks, but we’ve had two tough games in quick succession and another one coming up so we need to take a close look at who can start,” he said.

“Both games (against West Ham and Manchester City) were really intense, so we have some players we need to have a closer look at again to see if we can bring them in again from the beginning or bring on. It’s really a short turnaround because we play tomorrow at 12.30pm, so we will see.

“I will wait for the last-minute pretty much to make my final decisions. There are no ‘injuries’, but knocks here and there and I will get further information later today.”
