Jurgen Klopp has insisted Liverpool do act “responsibly” in the market after criticism of club owner John W. Henry’s calls for “limits” on transfer spending.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe voiced his unhappiness at the prospect of more restrictions after Henry spoke in the week of his desire for “responsible” spending across the Premier League due to certain club’s “unsustainable” plans.
Howe, whose side are fighting Liverpool for a place in next season’s Champions League, said: “I wouldn’t want to see any more restrictions on spending. We have spent money - don’t get me wrong - but future restrictions would certainly deny our ability to improve as quickly as we want to.”
Liverpool have spent considerable sums themselves over recent years and are linked with a big splash on Jude Bellingham in the summer.
But Klopp described a number of recent signings as “wise investments” required to fill gaps in the team.
The Reds boss told reporters: “It’s not about names or players but John’s right.
“If you have a look at the players we brought in in the last couple of transfer windows, Luis [Diaz], Darwin [Nunez], Cody [Gakpo] all players for the frontline. Sadio [Mane], Bobby [Firmino] and Mo [Salah] together were for quite a while one of the best front threes in world football.
“Sadio left in the summer, Bobby next summer, Mo is [the only one] left pretty much but we replaced them. Diogo [Jota] came in as well. I think that's investment. It’s wise investment, responsible investment. It’s what you want and what we needed.
“We’ll do that for other parts of the team and it will be possible.”
