Jurgen Klopp admits Mohamed Salah's mind is elsewhere as he makes Luis Diaz promise

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits Mohamed Salah is still feeling the effects of Egypt's disappointment in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

But the outlook is much rosier for Anfield new boy Luis Diaz, who has been training with a smile on his face after shining on his debut against Cardiff.

Diaz, 25, came off the bench and played a key role in the Reds' second goal of Sunday's FA Cup tie, shortly after joining in a £50million transfer.

Later that day, Salah did not fare so well as his Egypt side fell to a crushing loss on penalties to Senegal, with Sadio Mane striking the winning spot kick.

The Pharaohs captain returned to Merseyside earlier this week and he is eager to feature against Leicester on Thursday, but Klopp acknowledges he is still coming to terms with his heartbreak in the AFCON final.

"He is happy to be back but is disappointed as well," Klopp said of Salah. "Yesterday everyone could see that he still has the final in his mind."

Speaking at his press conference on Wednesday, the German was then quizzed on whether Salah could emerge from the defeat by Senegal with even more determination.

Klopp responded: "Greater determination for Mo? I am not sure that is human. I don't think there's a lot space for more determination in Mo's mind.

"He will use this kind of thing, that's the job of all of us, losing a final is hard, but using it for the next big game can at least help.

"We are the best example of that, losing a final is hard. But if you use it for the next big tournament, it can still be helpful.

"How we will benefit from it exactly, I don't know."

Klopp knows all about learning from a painful defeat and coming back stronger, famously leading Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2019 having lost to Real Madrid the previous year.

The Reds are still competing on all four fronts this season, and they strengthened their squad in January by purchasing Diaz from Porto for a sizeable sum.

Klopp was delighted with the Colombia winger's bright debut against Cardiff and he has promised there is "a lot more to come".

"I liked his contribution when he came on in the Cardiff," Klopp said of Diaz. "Yesterday, he enjoyed his training session a lot.

"I'm not sure I ever saw a player smiling so constantly during a rondo. We can see he fitted in during the last game, he played exactly as we wanted him to. There's a lot more to come."
