Think of railway revenue and passenger fares or freight charges usually come to mind. But Central Railway has found another sizeable source of income in something far less glamorous: scrap. The Mumbai-based railway zone has generated Rs 323.50 crore from scrap sales between April and September 2026, emerging as the highest-earning zone in the country during the first half of the 2026-27 financial year. The figure was reported by The Times of India, citing Central Railway officials. The earnings came through the Railways' Zero Scrap Mission, under which unused, condemned and obsolete railway material is identified, segregated and auctioned.
