MUMBAI: The city witnessed five times the number of H1N1 cases last month compared to July 2021, according to the BMC’s latest weekly epidemiological report. Only 21 cases of H1N1 were recorded last July, while the BMC has reports of 105 cases of the viral fever this July. Other monsoon maladies like leptospirosis and dengue, too, rose in incidence in the wettest July in years.
Leptospirosis, the bacterial infection that spreads through floodwaters contaminated with the urine of animals, affected 227 Mumbaikars in 2021. In July 2021, 37 cases of leptospirosis were reported from municipal hospitals. “This July, we saw 65 cases,” said a BMC official.
