Judge To Decide On Trump's Hush Money Conviction

Former President Donald Trump, standing with defense attorney Todd Blanche, speaks at the conclusion of proceedings for the day at his trial at Manhattan criminal court, Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in New

A judge is set to make a crucial decision on Tuesday regarding the conviction of President-elect Donald Trump in his hush money case. The case involves a $130,000 payment made to porn actor Stormy Daniels in 2016 to keep her allegations of an affair with Trump confidential.

The judge presiding over the trial is now tasked with determining whether to overturn the jury verdict, order a new trial, or dismiss the charges altogether. This decision could also impact whether Trump will be sentenced as scheduled on November 26.

Trump, who recently won the presidential election, faces legal scrutiny over his actions as a past president, not as an incoming one. The jury convicted him in May of falsifying business records related to the hush money payment.

Following a recent Supreme Court ruling, which stated that ex-presidents cannot be prosecuted for actions taken during their presidency, Trump's lawyers argue that certain evidence presented during the trial should not have been considered. Prosecutors, however, maintain that the evidence was crucial to their case.

The case revolves around how Trump reimbursed his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, for the payment to Daniels. Prosecutors allege that the reimbursement was disguised as legal expenses to conceal the true purpose of the payments.

Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the payment was for legitimate legal services and to protect his family from embarrassment, not to influence the election.

Despite being tried as a private citizen, Trump's impending return to the White House as president-elect adds a unique dimension to the legal proceedings. He has been fighting to overturn the conviction and may seek to leverage his status as the incoming president.

While pushing for the conviction to be overturned, Trump is also attempting to move the case to federal court, despite previous rejections by a federal judge. The legal battle continues as the judge prepares to make a pivotal decision in this high-profile case.
