Judge rules RFK Jr overstepped authority on healthcare for trans youth

  • A federal judge has temporarily blocked restrictions on gender-affirming healthcare for minors, ruling that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. overstepped his authority.
  • Kennedy had issued a “declaration” in 2025, claiming certain forms of affirming care were “unsafe and ineffective” and threatening to penalize doctors and hospitals supporting trans youth.
  • The ruling by Oregon U.S. District Judge Mustafa Kasubhai came after 19 states and Washington, D.C., challenged Kennedy's policy in a lawsuit.
  • New York Attorney General Letitia James highlighted the harm caused by the administration's attacks on trans youth, saying the decision provides clarity for patients, families, and providers.
  • The ruling is seen as a big win for LGBTQ+ civil rights groups, who argue that healthcare for transgender people is essential and politicians should not dictate medical standards.
