Judge Refuses to Suspend Bribery Charges Against Natanael Cano in Mexico

In Spanish

The case against Mexican singer-songwriter Natanael Cano is moving forward. Accused of bribing two police officers, the presiding judge announced he would not entertain the defense's suggestion to dismiss charges against the artist.

According to a public report from the Sonora State Prosecutor's Office, shared on X this week, Cano had hoped the judiciary would help end the legal process, but his request was denied.

"In a follow-up to the case the Sonora State Attorney General's Office (FGJES) is pursuing against Natanael 'N', it is reported that in today's hearing at 11:15 am, the Control Judge resolved to deny the request for conditional suspension of the process against the defendant, who faces two counts of bribery," the statement read.

The charge refers to his attempt to bribe police officers. Additionally, Cano is accused of speeding in Hermosillo (in the state of Sonora) and initiating a chase with the police during which he allegedly offered money to the officers after being apprehended.

The judicial entity further explained the defense's proposed actions following the request to drop charges.

"During the hearing, the defense requested a conditional suspension of the process, proposing a damage repair plan that included a deposit of 10,000 pesos to the Justice Administration Fund and an additional contribution to a cancer foundation," the document added.

The Sonora Prosecutor's Office rejected the proposal, noting that "no prior assessment of the defendant had been conducted, an essential requirement before issuing a ruling."

Authorities indicated that the legal process remains underway, and if convicted, Cano would face the penalty mandated by law.

The Controversial Video

The incident referenced by the Prosecutor's Office occurred in March 2024 but only went viral six months later.

In a series of 'Close Friends' Instagram stories, the video of Natanael Cano's chase with the police was released. Instead of stopping, the singer sped up, initiating a pursuit.

Once officers caught up with the Mexican artist, they were seen talking, and at one point, he threw several bills of money on the ground, which the officers picked up, reinforcing the bribery allegation.

The legal battle continues, with the potential to have a lasting impact on Natanael Cano's music career.

His recently acclaimed album 'Nata Montana' had made him a shoo-in for the 2024 Latin Grammys but it seems he will be unable to attend the ceremony in Miami this year due to the charges against him.
