Georgia's ban on abortion starting at around six weeks into a pregnancy has been overturned by a judge. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney said the ban violated the US Constitution and the US Supreme Court precedent when it was put into place.
His decision applies across the state. The ban had been in force since July.
It prohibited most abortions once a “detectable human heartbeat” is present. Cardiac activity can be detected by ultrasound in cells within an embryo that will eventually become the heart as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.
