Former Miami-Dade County Court judge Jeff Swartz recently shared his insights on the confirmation hearings of a new judge, Eileen Cannon. Swartz expressed concerns about Cannon's lack of experience and knowledge for the role of a federal district judge. He highlighted that Cannon has not fully utilized resources available to her, such as consulting with other experienced judges in the Southern District of Florida.
Swartz also raised questions about potential biases and political issues surrounding Cannon's appointment. Despite receiving support from Senator Marco Rubio and being appointed by former President Donald Trump, there have been no public complaints from Trump World or the Justice Department regarding Cannon's performance.
Regarding financial disclosures of US Supreme Court justices, Swartz emphasized the need for ethical reforms rather than just financial reforms. He pointed out instances where Justice Clarence Thomas allegedly falsified financial disclosures and received significant gifts from individuals with potential interests before the court.
Swartz suggested that Congress should impose a strict ethical code on the Supreme Court justices to ensure integrity and transparency. He proposed that non-compliance with financial disclosures should be punishable to the extent of being considered a high crime or misdemeanor, leading to potential impeachment.
While there have been legislative proposals addressing these issues, none have progressed in the US Senate. Swartz underscored the importance of holding justices accountable for their financial dealings and ensuring that ethical standards are upheld within the highest court in the land.
