Argentina fans have been arrested in Spain after trying to scale Madrid's 115ft tall Christmas tree last night following the World Cup win, according to Spanish police.
Riot officers had to intervene in the Spanish capital around midnight after a group of supporters started throwing bottles and other hand-made missiles at cops who were trying to clear the streets following Argentina's monumental win against France.
Police were attempting to clear Madrid’s central Puerta de Sol area where jubilant fans had gathered to celebrate Lionel Messi and their nation’s success.
According to the police headquarters, national police arrested two fans who were trying to climb the Christmas tree installed in the centre of the square, reports El Mundo.
This brought the total to three after two arrests earlier in the evening in the same area. Five police officers were also injured over the course of the night.
Also in the centre of the Spanish capital, there were more charges against another group of fans in Calle de Carretas and Preciados, as health workers assisted several people with minor and superficial injuries.
Luckily, none required hospital treatment, reports say.
The incidents followed France's loss in the World Cup final as they came back from 2-0 down, reached 3-3 after extra time, but collapsed in the penalty shoot-out, to lose 4-2.
As more than 50,000 Argentine fans watched the final in Qatar, millions of pundits took to watch the game back at home as they packed into bars and cafés back home.
Thousands of supporters were captured celebrating in Madrid downtown, pouring out into the streets; waving flags and burning coloured flames.
A spokesman for Spain’s National Police in Madrid said: “Two men were arrested around 8pm after some of the supporters gathered in Sol tried to climb the Christmas tree there.
“They assaulted officers who intervened to stop them.
“They were arrested for public order offences and assault.
“A third Argentinian was arrested around midnight for the same offences after a group of supporters turned violent when police started to clear around 1,000 fans who were still in the area."
The spokesman added: “Riot police had to intervene in Carretas Street next to Sol because bottles and other missiles were being thrown at officers.
“Five officers suffered slight injuries. As well as the three arrests, six people were identified and another three fined for misdemeanours.”
There were no immediate reports of arrests in other cities in Spain.
The epicentre of the Argentinian celebrations were the Barcelona's Arc de Triomf monument, where around 10,000 supporters partied.
A spokesman for the regional Mossos d’Esquadra police confirmed on Monday morning that there were no incidents reported.
They said: “No public order problems occurred last night.”
Meanwhile, in France, officers were seen striking fans with batons and tear gas on football fans following the country's devastating loss - putting their 2018 World Cup victory behind them.
Fireworks exploded in Paris, Lyon and Nice as the country deployed around 14,000 police officers nationwide before the game began.
