Juan Mata hints at Manchester United departure with goodbye gesture after Crystal Palace defeat

Juan Mata waved to supporters after Manchester United lost 1-0 against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

Mata's contract expires at the end of next month and he's expected to leave the club. Although Mata started on the bench at Selhurst Park, he came on as a substitute in the second half in what looks set to be his final appearance for United.

After the full-time whistle on Sunday, Mata approached United's travelling contingent and applauded the supporters. With his teammates returning to the dressing room, he was the last United to hang back and he waved toward fans.

It seems Mata, 34, waving to United's away support was his final goodbye ahead of a departure from the club this summer. Mata started in United's final home game of the season against Brentford two weeks ago and that seemed his goodbye to Old Trafford.

Mata signed a one-year contract at United last summer, but his final season at the club hasn't gone as he would have hoped. United have recorded their lowest ever points tally and Mata has started just four times across all competitions.

United signed Mata from Chelsea for a then-club record £37.1million in January 2014 and he started in the 2016 FA Cup final victory, as well as the 2017 League Cup and Europa League final triumphs. Mata is considered a cult hero at Old Trafford.

Mata has contributed 51 goals and 47 assists in 284 appearances across eight years for United.
