Juan Mata celebrates title win one year after leaving Manchester United

Juan Mata has taken to social media to celebrate being crowned a league champion one year after he left Manchester United.

Mata left Old Trafford last summer after eight-and-a-half years at the club, but United wanted to keep hold of the Spaniard and ease him into an administrative role.

Erik ten Hag's side were prepared to offer Mata one more playing contract, but he declined as he wanted to play regularly in the final years of his career.

The 35-year-old might not have played as often as he would have liked for Galatasaray, but it has still been a season to remember as they won the Turkish League title on Tuesday night.

Mata was an unused substitute as his side picked up their first league title since 2019 with a 4-1 win away against Ankaragucu.

The former Spain international scored three goals and notched one assist in 15 league appearances for the Turkish side, making just two starts in the league.

Mata only signed a one-year deal at Galatasaray, with the option of an additional year, and could well be looking for a new club this summer after a disappointing personal campaign.

United are hopeful Mata could return to the club in the future and believe he has potential as a technical director when he retires.

Mata joined United for a then-club record £37.1million from Chelsea in January 2014 and started in their three cup final victories in the FA Cup, League Cup, and Europa League in 2016 and 2017.

The Spaniard played 285 times and scored 51 goals for United.
