Joy Division call for better mental health services 40 years on from Ian Curtis' death

Former members of Joy Division today lobbied MPs for better mental health services 40 years after their lead singer took his own life.

Ian Curtis, who had epilepsy and depression, died at the age 23 in 1980 on the eve of the Manchester post-punk band’s first North American tour.

Guitarist Bernard Sumner, now 66, said at Parliament: “Ian tried to commit suicide months before. He took an overdose.
