London: Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, the Queen, was born on 21 April, 1926, in London, and was the oldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth. At that moment, Princess Elizabeth and her family had no idea she would one day become a Queen.

Princess Elizabeth and her only sibling, Princess Margaret, were educated at home by their mother and governess, Marion Crawford. Elizabeth had always shown a sense of responsibility and orderliness.
Everything changed in December 1936, when her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated, leaving her father as King and her as the next in line to the throne.

Elizabeth fell in love with Prince Philip Mountbatten of Greece and Denmark, in 1939 and the duo got married in 1947 when Prince Philip was serving as a young officer in the Royal Navy and Elizabeth was just 21. The couple then had four children, Prince Charles, who was born in 1948, Princess Anne (1950), Prince Andrew (1960) and Prince Edward (1964).
Elizabeth's life turned upside down when her father, King George VI, died of cancer in 1952, and she came to the throne with immediate effect. Her coronation took place in 1953, and she ruled the Commonwealth for the next seven decades.

Elizabeth celebrated the Silver Jubilee of her accession in 1977 and the Golden Jubilee, the 50th anniversary of the coronation, in 2002.
After 73 years of marriage, Prince Philip died in April 2021, making Elizabeth the first British monarch to reign as a widow or widower since Queen Victoria.
In December 2007, Elizabeth became the longest-living British monarch, and on 9 September, 2015, she became the world's longest-reigning British monarch, queen regnant, and female head of state. (ANI)
