Journalist sentenced for raping colleague more than 10 years after assault took place

  • Indian journalist Tarun Tejpal has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after the Bombay High Court’s Goa bench convicted him of raping and sexually harassing a junior colleague.
  • The court overturned a 2021 trial court ruling that had acquitted Tejpal of all charges related to the 2013 assaults during a work event.
  • Tejpal, the 63-year-old founder and former editor-in-chief of Tehelka magazine, was also ordered to pay a fine of approximately 1 million rupees (about £7,815) to the survivor.
  • The High Court criticized the lower court's acquittal as 'perverse,' stating it relied on 'stereotypical assumptions' about how a sexual assault survivor should react.
  • Tejpal plans to challenge the conviction in the Supreme Court and has been granted four weeks to surrender.
