Taylor edged past Catterall in hugely controversial result
(Picture: Action Images via Reuters)BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom has confirmed Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall have agreed a rematch in 2023, a year after their first controversial fight.
Taylor retained his undisputed super-lightweight world titles against the WBO’s mandatory challenger at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro Arena in February via a split decision.
The result, however, was hugely contentious and many ex-boxers, fans and pundits claimed the impressive Catterall had done enough over a gritty 12 rounds.
Judge Howard Foster did score the bout 113-112 in Catterall’s favour, but the other two cards on the night backed the champion, 114-111 (Ian John-Lewis) and 113-112 (Victor Loughlin).
One of the most talked about fights of 2022, the result was investigated by the British Boxing Board of Control and led to John-Lewis’ demotion from an A Star Class to an A Class Official.
“I can now officially announce that both fighters have signed for the fight,” said Shalom.
“The fight date is locked in and it will be announced in the next week or so. It’s going to be happening in the next two or three months.
“It’s imminent and it will be in Glasgow, back at the scene of the crime.”
