Joseph McGarrity: Omagh crash claims life of man in his 50s

A man in his 50s has died following a single vehicle crash in the Omagh area on Thursday.

Police named the man who died as 57-year-old Joseph McGarrity, who was from the Co Tyrone town. In later update, it was confirmed that they are treating the incident as a 'sudden death'.

Police say they received a report of the collision on the Killyclogher Road area at around 5.50pm on Thursday evening.

The Killyclogher Road was closed for a number of hours on Thursday as emergency service attended the scene of the crash, but Mr McGarrity died a short time later.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the collision.

"Police can confirm that a man has died following a road traffic collision in Omagh yesterday evening, Thursday 9 February," a PSNI spokesperson said.

"He was 57-year-old Joseph McGarrity from the Omagh area."

Inspector Long said: “At approximately 5.50pm, we received a report of a one-vehicle road traffic collision in the Killyclogher Road area.

“Officers and other emergency services attended, however Mr McGarrity sadly died a short time later. The Killyclogher Road, which was closed for several hours, has since reopened.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dash-cam or CCTV footage that could assist with our enquiries, to contact police at the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference 1494 of 09/02/23.”
