Jose Mourinho aims brutal thinly-veiled dig at Philippe Clement

Jose Mourinho has responded to criticism over his style of play from former Rangers manager Philippe Clement.

Just days before he was sacked by the Scottish Premiership giants, the Belgian spoke to the media as he reacted to Rangers' Europa League last-16 draw, pairing them with Fenerbahce.

In doing so, Clement detailed that while he admires the former Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Real Madrid mastermind, he admitted that his wasn't so keen on his 'defensive' style.

Now, ahead of tomorrow night's clash between Fenerbahce and Barry Ferguson's men, Mourinho has hit back.

He said: "Do you think I'm going to comment on, what's his name? Philippe Clement?

"I'm not going to answer. Do you want to ask me another question?"

Then asked about Ferguson, the Special One continued: "I know his history as a football player for Scotland, for Rangers.

"I don't know much about his career as a coach, but I respect a lot the connection, the emotional connection between him as a coach and his club now. I think that is a very important thing in a football club, is the connection between the fans and the coach.

"You can tell me that he doesn't have much experience in European football as a coach. You can tell me all the negative things that you could find. I prefer to go on the positive side. I think it's going to be much more difficult with him as a coach than with the previous coach.

"Because the previous coach was more worried about philosophy than on the pitch. It's on the pitch that you win matches, it's not with philosophy. For sure, Ferguson will be much more pragmatic, much more objective. It will be hard for us, but it's going to be hard for them."

Clement said at the time: "Of course, he is someone that has won so many trophies.

"There are different managers with different styles. He won a lot of trophies in a certain style.

"I like even more managers with another style, but the respect is there. It's about winning at the end, and he did that in several places with several teams, winning the biggest trophies you can win. It's normal to respect someone who has done this.

"He's somebody who is more on the defensive and reacting out of that, style.

"Personally, I prefer more than managers who go full in their attacking force and playing out of that.

"But I have incredible respect in the way he did it. That's just a personal preference."
