Now that Jake Paul is no longer undefeated, Jorge Masvidal doesn’t view him as a lucrative fight.
Paul previously called out Masvidal in 2021, but “Gamebred” thought the offer wasn’t worthy at the time. Masvidal and Paul, who once trained together before Paul’s fight with Ben Askren, have jawed back and forth on a potential boxing match in the past. But after Paul suffered his first-career loss, a split decision to Tommy Fury in February, Masvidal isn’t that interested anymore.
“Right now there’s nobody that I could really think of to call out,” Masvidal told MMA Junkie Radio. “But they already burst that bubble just because I always thought it would be a great fight for me, and that I could knock him out and make a lot of easy money while doing it, would have been Jake Paul. But that ship has sailed now that he lost that 0. Maybe he comes back and gets a couple of wins and stuff, but that’s probably the only dude because he’s easy money.
“I don’t think I was going to generate a huge pay-per-view sell with him, because he doesn’t bring those types of pay-per-views. But me being involved in boxing, who knows? Maybe I could have done well for myself and gotten some good pay-per-views.”
While he may not enter a ring anytime soon, Masvidal’s involvement in boxing on the promotion side continues. His Gamebred Boxing will holds its fourth show on April 1 at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee when former UFC champ Anthony Pettis meets boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. in thenight’s headliner.
Masvidal said he’d like to get his feet wet before boxing any established fighters, but for him, Paul doesn’t even meet the quota of a money fight.
“When he fought Woodley, when he fought Ben Askren, he hasn’t hit those marks that he thinks or that his people think he’s gonna hit,” Masvidal said. “So he’s not the draw, definitely. He’d be like the C-side. I’m like the A+-side if we’re talking about selling pay-per-views.”
Masvidal (35-16 MMA, 12-9 UFC) returns to action on April 8 when he meets Gilbert Burns in the UFC 287 co-headliner in Miami.
