Jorge Masvidal case continued as attorneys await Colby Covington medical evaluations

(Editor’s note: This story previously stated the hearing was pushed back eight weeks, though an updated court docket shows a rescheduled date of Oct. 25. The information has been corrected below to reflect such.)

The projected timeline in the ongoing Jorge Masvidal court proceedings continues to extend.

On Wednesday, Masvidal had a hearing in Miami-Dade County court as he faces two felony charges of battery and criminal mischief following an alleged attack of UFC rival Colby Covington last year. Masvidal did not attend court in person or online but was represented by an attorney.

The hearing lasted less than a minute as a district attorney representative informed Judge Zachary James that state prosecutors need more time to organize and analyze medical evaluations of Covington. The defense also indicated it had motions pending on those evaluations.

Judge James granted the continuance with a rescheduled date of Oct. 25. Additionally, the targeted trial start date has shifted to Nov. 6.

In February, Masvidal’s attorney, Saam Zanganeh, voiced optimism the case would be settled. However, that is yet to come to fruition.

Masvidal, 38, is accused of attacking Covington outside a Miami restaurant in March 2022, just a few weeks after Masvidal lost a lopsided unanimous decision to Covington at UFC 272. The alleged attack resulted in injuries to Covington, including broken teeth and a concussion, say state attorneys.

If found guilty, Masvidal could face up to 15 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine for second-degree felony aggravated battery with additional penalties possible for the criminal mischief charge.

Masvidal has maintained his innocence since the incident occurred.
