Padres catcher Jorge Alfaro and his mom had a Mother’s Day yesterday that they’ll never forget.
Before Sunday’s game Alfaro saw that he wasn’t in the lineup for series finale at home against the Marlins. Like a good son he called his mom to wish her a happy Mother’s Day and she had a message for him:
“If you’re not in the lineup, just be ready, you’re going to hit a home run today,” Alfaro said after the game with a laugh. “I’m like, ‘Mom, that’s hard to do.'”
Later that afternoon with the Padres trailing 2-0 in the ninth inning and having two men on base, Alfaro stepped in as a pinch-hitter and ended the game on the first pitch that he saw:

Amazing.
He said he was thinking about his mom as he circled the bases:
“It’s just unbelievable. She called it earlier, right before the game started. After I hit the ball, I was running the bases, and it was like I was dreaming. It feels like a dream. How did she know!?”
That’s a pretty darn good Mother’s Day present!
