Jordan Spieth has been disqualified from the JP McManus Pro-Am after making a ridiculous mistake when putting on the 14th green. Spieth has joined a number of PGA Tour stars including Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas in competing in the Irish event.
As well as some of the biggest names in golf, the PGA Tour stars also played alongside a number of A-list celebrities, with the likes of Bill Murray, Niall Horan and John Terry all teeing it up at Adare Manor. The event is split into two leaderboards, with the professional competing in a singles tournament between them, as well as a team event which includes the celebs.
Whilst out on the course though, Spieth clearly forgot that he was competing across two separate competitions - and this slip in concentration has cost him his place in the singles event.
As a result, Spieth and his team were out on the par five 14th when he reportedly scooped up his ball off the putting surface after being unable to score for his team. Whilst his ball was void for the team event it was still active for the strokeplay singles tournament, meaning his pick up led to his disqualification.
Despite his DQ, the 28-year-old continued to play in the team event alongside three of the McManus’ in Owen, Sean and Shelley. Their four-player team, the South Liberties, finished day one in a tie for 28th after shooting 11-under-par on Monday.
Rory McIlroy’s team - which included Gerry, Mark and Cormac McManus - were the winning team on day one, as they carded an impressive score of 22-under-par to clinch the Monday competition by five strokes. The man leading the professional leaderboard following play on day one was Spieth’s American Ryder Cup teammate Xander Schauffele, as the PGA Tour star carded an impressive eight-under-par 64 around the Irish course.
Arguably the main attraction of the day was Woods, who was making his first appearance back out on the course since withdrawing from the PGA Championship at the end of May. The golfing legend made quite the arrival at Adare Manor on Sunday, flying in on his private helicopter ahead of the event.
Clearly still recovering, There was still some rust on the 15-time major champion as he kicked off his week with a five-over 77 on day one. Despite the struggles, Woods showed a glimpse of his old self on the par five 12th, as he chipped in off the green for eagle to the delight of the Irish support watching on.
