Jordan Pickford's history of mixed success at St James' Park

The closest Jordan Pickford ever got to a Tyne-Wear derby for Sunderland was three appearances against Newcastle United U21s, and an appearance on the bench in their 1-1 draw in 2016.

All four of his visits to St James' Park have come in his six years at Everton, and the former Black Cats star has endured mixed success against the Magpies.

There will be an extra incentive for Pickford to impress when Everton travel to St James' Park on Wednesday evening. Although Pickford appears to be leading the race for the England number one slot ahead of the World Cup, the Everton goalkeeper will be looking to lay down a marker in his battle with Nick Pope.

With that in mind, ChronicleLive has taken a look at his previous battles against the Magpies at St James' Park.

December 13, 2017: Newcastle 0-1 Everton

Pickford was victorious on his first visit to Newcastle, although he had his woodwork to thank for his clean sheet at full-time.

He was first drawn into action with a textbook save from Matt Ritchie's tame strike, but the Scotsman came closer moments later when his rocket from outside the box cannoned off the post.

At the other end, Karl Darlow spilled a header from Everton's diminutive winger Aaron Lennon (of all people), before Wayne Rooney gobbled up the rebound for the decisive goal.

Newcastle threatened an equaliser but again saw the post come to Everton's rescue from Mikel Merino's speculative long-range strike. Florian Lejeune's header across the face of goal caused panic in the Everton defence, but Mohamed Diame was unable to get a decisive touch on the ball.

March 9, 2019: Newcastle 3-2 Everton

Pickford looked set to secure back-to-back victories on Tyneside when Everton stormed into a two-goal lead inside 32 minutes. Pickford experienced an eventful opening half an hour - conceding and then saving a penalty either side of goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

He spilled Ritchie's cross and then recklessly hauled down Salomon Rondon inside the box. Ritchie was unable to punish Pickford for his error as the Everton shot-stopper sprawled to his left to thwart the Newcastle winger from the spot with his trailing leg.

Rondon offered Newcastle a lifeline by reducing the deficit just past the hour mark, and created the platform for Ayoze Perez to take centre stage. The Spaniard scored twice in quick succession during the final 10 minutes to secure a remarkable second half comeback for the Magpies.

Miguel Almiron's shot from range proved too hot to handle for Pickford and Perez pounced to equalise from the rebound. Pickford's defence was more to blame for the winning goal, as they twice failed to clear their lines, before Perez fired an emphatic half volley past Pickford from close range.

December 28, 2019: Newcastle 1-2 Everton

Pickford collected his second win in Newcastle courtesy of a brace from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Andy Carroll found the net for Newcastle but was rightly flagged offside after Calvert-Lewin's 13th minute opener.

The equaliser eventually did come when Fabian Schar volleyed home Carroll's knockdown in the 56th minute.

Calvert-Lewin restored Everton's advantage seven minutes later when he was left unmarked to tap in Richarlison's low cross.

February 8, 2022: Newcastle 3-1 Everton

Pickford made his first trip to Newcastle over two years in February and it was one to forget for the 28-year-old. He was left on the bench by Carlo Ancelotti for their 2-0 defeat during the previous campaign, as the Italian opted for Robin Olsen between the sticks.

Newcastle secured a third straight victory over the Toffees, despite falling behind through Jamaal Lascelles' own goal. Moments later, Mason Holgate suffered the same misfortune at the other end when Lascelles' header cannoned off the crossbar and rebounded into the net off the Everton defender.

This would prove just the incentive that Newcastle needed to mount another comeback over the Toffees. In the second half, Allan Saint-Maximin dug out a cross over Pickford and Ryan Fraser was on hand in the box to stab his finish beyond both Pickford and Andros Townsend on the goal line.

Kieran Trippier sealed the win in the 80th minute with an exquisite curling free-kick beyond his England teammate from range.
