Liverpool have taken the Premier League title race down to the final day, and Jordan Henderson has given his views on the Reds needing a favour from Steven Gerrard.
Despite being handed an early scare, Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 away at Southampton, and head into the final day of the season trailing Manchester City by a singular point. Liverpool must win their last game of the season against Wolves, and hope that Aston Villa can take points off City to win the title.
Gerrard may have missed out on Premier League success with Liverpool, but he can help deliver his former side a title if his Villa side cause an upset against City. And Henderson has reacted by hoping that his former captain can do Liverpool a favour.
Liverpool have been in this position before during the 2018/19 season, and coincidentally played Wolves on the final day too. City travelled to Brighton, but after going a goal down, they won 4-1 to lift the title.
All Liverpool can do is hope that fortunes are different this time around, and poetically it's up to Gerrard to determine their fate. Henderson spoke about the situation after Liverpool's 2-1 win against Southampton, as he said: "It’s hard. We have had this before when they played Brighton away and they went one goal up.
"The crowd cheer and you sort of know what is going on, it’s hard to concentrate on the game and hopefully, we have that experience, we can learn from it and concentrate on what we need to do. And hopefully Stevie (Gerrard) and Aston Villa can do us a favour."
Liverpool named a weakened team in a must-win game against Southampton, with the likes of Fabinho, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander Arnold, Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane all missing out. But they got the job done, and Henderson put this down to a boost over the weekend.
"I think the cup final at the weekend gave us a little boost to get us over the line," Henderson added. "We have one or two lads with knocks and bruises that haven’t travelled today, but hopefully they will be okay for the weekend.
"We had fresh legs on the pitch tonight which was important and the lads are at home resting for the weekend, they should be fresh for Sunday." Liverpool only have two games to go in a remarkable season, and they could still secure two trophies in that time.
With a bit of help, they could win a dramatic second Premier League title to secure a domestic treble, after already winning the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. And to cap off the season, they travel to Paris to face Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp clearly has great trust in his side, and he wasn't taking any risks against Southampton. The German will be hoping that all of his stars are fit for the final two games, with injuries occurring at the worst possible time within the squad.
The Reds have already had a fantastic season, and if they can add another trophy to their mix then it will be a historic treble winning campaign. If they can get a slice of luck and win all four through, they'll be the first team to ever do so in England.
