Jordan Henderson 'not training fully' ahead of Man City vs Liverpool
Gareth Southgate has revealed that he held Jordan Henderson back for England’s game against Italy after the Liverpool captain was unable to train properly.
Harry Kane became England's all-time record goalscorer as his side beat Roberto Mancini's side 2-1 in their first Euro 2024 qualifier in Naples on Thursday night. It was the first time Southgate’s side had played since their World Cup exit at the hands of France.
West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice opened the scoring from close range after Kane's shot was blocked in the 13th minute. England were then awarded a penalty after Kane's back post header was deemed to have been handled and the Tottenham Hotspur man made no mistake from 12-yards.
Italy pulled one back through debutant Mateo Retegui just after the interval before Luke Shaw was sent off for two yellow cards with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Henderson was named on the bench for the game with Southgate instead opting for Kalvin Phillips in midfield alongside Rice.

Liverpool linked with son of France legend
Liverpool could turn to a familiar name to help reshape their struggling midfield next season.
The Reds have been named alongside Manchester United as one of several clubs interested in OGC Nice star Khephren Thuram.
That's according to 90min, who say that the 21-year-old defensive midfielder, who is the son of former France international Lilian Thuram, has been making rapid progress in Ligue 1, with his impressive performances turning heads.
But competition is likely to be stiff, with Newcastle United, Juventus, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain all claimed to be tracking his progress.
Thuram is aware of the speculation swirling around his future, but is insisting for now that his focus is purely on Nice. As quoted by 90min, he said: “I hear, but I don’t concentrate on it. I am with Nice. I am very happy where I am. I am trying to get bigger with the club. I am trying to grow up with the club. So, yeah, obviously I hear it [the interest] but it’s not the most important. The most important is to do good with the team and be happy where I am.”
