Jordan Henderson delivers Darwin Nunez verdict after Liverpool victory over Manchester City

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has hailed the mentality of his team-mates to beat Manchester City after they were pegged back by Julian Alvarez's equaliser midway through the second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring at the King Power stadium with a sublime whipped effort past Ederson, albeit with help of a deflection from Nathan Ake, as Liverpool's early dominance was rewarded.

Though a fumble from Adrian in the second half allowed summer signing Alvarez to peg Jurgen Klopp's men back, however, the introduction of summer signing Darwin Nunez helped the Reds pull into the lead once more as he won a penalty for his - which Mohamed Salah dispatched with ease as he marked his first outing with his maiden goal of the campaign.

The Uruguayan put the icing on the cake for his new side deep into an additional time when he capitalised on Andy Robertson's knockdown to nod home from close range past a helpless Ederson, which was the signal for the ultimate let-off from the travelling Kop.

And it was that kind of mentality, that has undermined the Jurgen Klopp era, which impressed Henderson following Saturday's victory.

"I thought it was a good game," the captain told Liverpoolfc.com. "I thought there were a lot of positives throughout the game. We probably should have gone 2-0 up and killed the game off but then they scored to come back into it, but we showed great mentality and great character to keep going and score another two goals, so overall we’ve got to be pleased with the performance."

"[Manchester] City are a fantastic team, so you’ve got to work hard for it and we sure did work hard for the result, but we look in good shape and, like I said, there is a lot of positives to take from the game."

Though individually, the Uruguayan's brief, yet eye-catching, cameo impressed his captain ahead of his potential Premier League debut against newly-promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage next weekend.

"I thought [Nunez] was really good when he came on, putting himself about and always looked a threat. Thankfully he got a goal as well so that will do his confidence the world of good.

"It was a fantastic goal by Trent, the build-up was good before [and] a great finish. Obviously Mo’s penalty was fantastically executed as well so some really good moments, good goals in the game and overall I thought we deserved to win."
