Jonny Hayes has blasted misfiring Aberdeen after the Dons fell to a humiliating 4-0 defeat away to Dundee United on Saturday night to inflict more wounds amid their troubled form on the road.
Liam Fox's men came into the game bottom of the Scottish Premiership but responded in emphatic fashion thanks to quick fire goals from Aziz Behich and Tony Watt just before half time. A Jamie McGrath penalty and Ross McCrorie own goal inflicted more misery on the side from the Granite City in the second half.
And Hayes knows it was unacceptable to be on the end of such a disappointing scoreline. "To be honest I'm embarrassed", Hayes told RED TV. "I am a bit dejected at the performance. We'll look through it well I will look through it tonight and see where we started to go wrong but I'm embarrassed for the football club. For people who have paid good money to come down here.
"It was an unbelievable travelling support there's not many clubs up and down the land that get that kind of backing. We get it and I'm a bit embarrassed."
The Red Army had packed two stands of Tannadice with a four thousand strong away following and Hayes feels the club owe the fans after the dismal display on Tayside. And the Irishman wasn't wanting to put any blame on the referee for the result despite Willie Collum awarding a dubious penalty during the match.
He added: "To be honest I don't want to hide behind that. We are 2-0 down and even if Jamie (McGrath) goes on and misses the penalty we are still 2-0 down and we probably haven't done enough to get back in the game.
"Again I don't want to make an excuse for that performance and I don't want to hide behind the referee or the penalty or whatever it may be. I don't want to hide behind any. It was a pitiful performance from start to at least 60 minutes in."
